I have been living in the US for about two years now, and hadn't talked to my Dad for about a year and a half. We had almost lost complete touch for that time until I discovered that he also had a Gmail account, because he appeared as one of my contacts in my contact list. My Dad is not very computer savvy, so he knows nothing about chatting programs. He does know his email though, and he had no clue about the chat tool on Gmail. Not until I sent him a message. We were both really glad, and now we talk regularly through Gmail chat.
