For me, email really didn't exist before Gmail. I had other email accounts, but they all were so riddled with spam that it was impossible to make heads or tails of legitimate email. Because of this, I really never used them for important email. It wasnt until I discovered the awesome power of Gmail, its label system, and its filters (both custom and spam), that I really discovered how useful email can be. It was the end of 2004 to early 2005, my senior year in High School. Now, I cant imagine using the internet without Gmail. It has defined email, and it has defined the web.
