I started with Gmail in the summer of 2005 (wow has it already been two years!?) because I needed access to my personal email from work. I was waiting for a time critical message (and I did not want to have to setup an SSL IMAP server at home, I was already running IMAP at home, but not allowing connections in from the Internet). I was so impressed with the user interface (I am a huge fan of threaded mail clients) that I have slowly moved all my personal email to Gmail. Now I also have a Google Apps account for my domain and I am fetching all my work email, too.
